The Jazz Ensemble will be departing Thursday evening March 15th, one day before the concert band, orchestra and marching band (departing Friday morning March 16th).
Why is the Jazz Ensemble leaving for Orlando the day before the rest of the band?
Over the past 4 years, the jazz ensemble has raised over $15,000 through the sale of its annual holiday CD. 100% of those funds have been given to 2 charities; Give Kids the World and The Children’s Brain Tumor Project. On Friday morning March 16th, the students of the jazz ensemble will be given a tour of the Give Kids the World campus, which is a short drive from our Disney hotel. The students will also be donating their time for volunteer work around the GKTW campus. In the early afternoon we will end our visit and head to one of the theme parks to meet up with the rest of the band who will be departing BHS Friday morning. If you would like to read more about Give Kids the World, click HERE. Despite our exciting performances and fun in the parks over the course of our stay, I believe this visit to Give Kids the World will carry the most profound memories for our students. Please note, there will be no additional cost to jazz ensemble students for the extra night’s stay as we will use a portion of this years CD sale to offset the cost.
Over the past 50 years, the Bernards High School Bands have enjoyed traveling to destinations such as Toronto, Florida, Chicago, South Carolina, California, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. These performance opportunities and experiences have truly been unforgettable. This spring, at Walt Disney World, the marching band will be performing in front of thousands of spectators as they lead the Disney Festival of Fantasy parade around Cinderella’s Castle and down the middle of Main Street USA! The beautiful Waterside stage located at Disney Springs will be the site for featured performances by our BHS concert band, jazz ensemble, and orchestra!
The cost of the trip for students will be $1,295 per person. This price will include round-trip airfare from Newark International to Orlando International Airport, hotel reservations (POP Century Resort on Disney property), charter bus transportation to and from the airport, breakfast and dinner while we are in Orlando (a $10 Disney Dining Card for breakfast, per day and a Meal Certificate redeemable for an entrée, side dish, dessert and beverage, per day), performances at Walt Disney World, 4 day admission to the Walt Disney World Theme Parks and Universal Studios Orlando. This price will not include lunch or any of the meals purchased while we are en route to and from Orlando.

One of the bonuses of being in the Bernards High School Band revolves around our travel opportunities. While many organizations dream about taking trips together, we are in a position to make these dreams come true. It serves as positive testimony to the work ethic of our band members, and is one of the privileges we enjoy as a group.
There are additional expectations attached to group travel. When we accept an invitation to perform away from our home, we also assume the responsibilities of being ambassadors and representatives of our band, our school, and our community. Individual considerations now become secondary to the entire organization’s welfare. The term good behavior takes on an all-new meaning as we assume the role of musical emissaries. Your best effort is now “the norm, “ and you will be asked to rise above it many times during our trip, displaying the ultimate in appropriate manners and personal deportment.
Should there be any need for disciplinary action, we will simply ask those in question to return home immediately with a chaperone at the student’s expense. The problem will be immediately addressed according to school policy. I feel certain this will not be necessary, but we do need to be prepared.
As we near the trip, we will have a comprehensive set of school policy guidelines and expectations that each student will be required to follow. These rules include, but are not limited to: no illegal substances such as alcohol or tobacco will be allowed, students will be taped in their rooms at night and expected not to leave their room without contacting their chaperone for assistance, specific curfew times, etc… If a student is found in violation of any of the trip guidelines or expectations, they will be sent home immediately, at the parents/guardians expense.
Any student in danger of failing a class, as in the case of excessive class absences, will not be allowed to participate on this trip.
Please feel free to call the band office or contact me via email if you have any questions.
The students and I are looking forward to a wonderful and safe trip this spring!
